Augustus Mitchell, Jr., who succeeded his father as one of the most prolific publishers of maps and atlases in the United States during the nineteenth century.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003ci\u003eNew General Atlas\u003c\/i\u003e replaced Mitchell senior's equally popular \u003ci\u003eNew Universal Atlas\u003c\/i\u003e (1846 - 59) and remained in print through later editions until 1893. The atlas was produced by lithography with color applied to each map by hand. \u003ci\u003eMinnesota and Dacotah\u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003enull\u003c\/i\u003e was apparently based on a combination of sources that included Joseph N. Nicollet's 1843 map of the \u003ci\u003eHydorgraphical Basin of the Upper Midwest River\u003c\/i\u003e and Lt. Gouverneur K.
